La danseuse malade rests on a moving ground, with a blending of the writings of Tatsumi Hijikata founder of Butoh, the reminiscences, the ghosts who have contributed to the invention of that dance, and the voices of Boris Charmatz and Jeanne Balibar, trying to embody them today - to explore their conflicts, their areas of darkness and eroticism.
In order to radiate around the play and the knots that cross it, the Dancing Museum and the TNB propose to shed a light on Butoh, through several prisms: how is the dance written, how are the words danced ? And how to replay something of this invented form with, and against, Japanese tradition ? How does it relate to our modernity ? How can one displace the clichés associated with it ?

Accompanied by Boris Charmatz, the students of the TNB will read a selection of texts triturating the complex relationship between dance and writing. Texts with heterogeneous statuses, touching various aspects of such a relationship: scripts of performances, poems set in motion by the rythm of words, written about dance... Films on Tatsumi Hijikata - as well as a conference by Patrick De Vos, translator of some of his writings, and specialist of the Japanese stage - will enable one to approach this "dance of darkness", drawn up at the crossings between a writing, a vision of the world, and a practice.

And finally, for the Rebutoh evening, three choreographers will offer an iconoclastic vision of Butoh, releasing it from the myths it usually conveys (pre-eminently Japanese form, strongly expressionist, and requiring a long apprenticeship). Xavier Le Roy will accept the challenge set up by Boris Charmatz: to create a Butoh dance within two hours. Yves-Noël Genod will look for ways of connecting with this word.
Latifa Laâbissi will present her performance inspired by the Dance of the Witch by Mary Wigman, an expressionist play which has deeply influenced Butoh.
"Of whom the Butoh dancers are they the ancestors ?" asked Hijikata, adressing the future. Of us, today, answers the Dancing Museum, in the present.
