Grimace du réel

At the Dancing Museum / Le Garage, Rennes
Saturday March 20th and Sunday 21st 2010

Programme imagined by Latifa Laâbissi around her own work.

Programme imagined by Latifa Laâbissi around her own work, Grimace du réel proposes itself to question the passages operated between construction of alterity, policies of genres, and aesthetic representations trying to explore its outlines. The chance to discover the works, references, inspirational sources supporting a research work. The play Self portrait camouflage by Latifa Laâbissi convokes the murky figures of colonial imaginary, and sends us back to the way social, sexual and cultural borders arise.A paradoxical projection of the body unveils itself, where can be felt the transgression of the way one looks at alterity, and the upsetting strangeness of our reflection in the mirror - the laughter and anguish that come with the self-portrait and the mask. In order to broaden the reflexive horizon and meet with other perspectives, Latifa Laâbissi has invited Brazilian choreographer Luiz De Abreu - whose play O samba do crioulo doido questions stereotypes usually associated with the black body, using the Brazilian flag as a costume or as a filter. Finally, Jack Smith' film, Flaming Creatures, is a plunge into a world where the blending of ambiguous sexual images reflects the upheaval of the genres. Documentary on a project of fiction, meditation on African history beginning with greek myths, Pier Paolo Pasolini's Carnet de notes pour une Orestie africaine gives to be seen the elaboration of the work: the filmmaker's interrogation concerning his own material - images - and their testing by reality.

By opening Latifa Laâbissi's image box, the Dancing Museum mobilizes together movement, works, speech, debates, creates sense and invites us to activate other forms of collective reflection.
